Though the two types of flooring are often grouped together, they aren’t quite the same pattern.
Herringbone uses rectangular boards laid in a zigzag arrangement, with each board meeting the next at a right angle. Chevron flooring is slightly different, as it has angled ends, creating a continuous ‘V’ pattern across the floor. The difference is subtle until you see the two side by side, but it can change the overall appearance of the room.

There’s more involved in fitting a herringbone or chevron floor, and it’s not just a case of simply laying boards in a different direction. The pattern needs to be planned properly before installation begins, otherwise even the smallest of errors can become noticeable as the job progresses.
